Today I'd like to share with you the first style post for The Butik (www.Butik.ae).
As mentioned in my interview with the Butik, the buyer, Futtaim, chooses an ecclectic range of pieces by unknown designers from all over the world. Her main concept for the store was to bring new and original creations to the UAE, as opposed to sending local designers out. With this in mind, I knew that I wanted a very Middle Eastern backdrop to compliment the idea of bringing anonymous designers into Dubai, marrying Arabian tradition with modern fashion design.
I worked on this shoot with the lovely Fanny Turcotte, from FT Photography. We had a great time experimenting with different shots and light, as both of us wanted to achieve as many diverse images as possible. An upcoming fashion photographer, Fanny was great to work with and made me feel completely at ease, explaining the importance of angles and how to pose when in front of the lens.
I chose the area of Bastakiya in old Dubai, as it is made up of a number of maintained traditional Arabic houses and wind towers - a place that has been kept just how it used to look years ago. It's not easy finding some authenticity and a bit of 'old' in our new and modern Dubai, so this place is a little gem.
I also wanted to dedicate one post entirely to this dress as it is just so iconic. Created by Korean designer, An Youn Jung, I feel like it's a totally dynamic piece that could be worn literally anywhere. Dress it with flip-flops and you're ready for the beach, with wedges its a lovely day dress and then of course, with killer heels, it's ideal for a chic night out. What's more, even though it hasn't been designed by anyone Middle Eastern, it has that Arabian feel to it - the flowing chiffon material, the shades of brown... love it!
And so, we spent the morning pottering about Bastakiya, dodging tourists and the sunshine - it was a particularly hot day! But it was worth it. I am so pleased with the images and hope you are too!
